The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning users to avoid buying Viagra without a prescription, a warning that was added to its “black box” warning in the latest edition of the drug’s annual “Patent Verification Program” (PVP) – the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) to ensure that the drug is approved for use in the US.
“Patients should only use Pfizer Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) if they have been diagnosed with the condition and are taking appropriate treatment for ED,” the new warning was released on May 18.
The new warning was based on the fact that Viagra is the only medication that is FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction. The FDA approved Viagra for the treatment of ED only after it was shown that it would increase blood flow to the penis.
